You’re coming to Jakarta for Radiodays Asia 2026, but your trip doesn’t have to begin and end at the conference! If you’re arriving a little early, staying for the weekend, or simply have a few hours free, Jakarta is a fascinating city to explore – packed with history, culture, food, shopping and plenty of places to discover.
So, once you’ve finished networking, learning and talking all things radio, podcasting and audio, here are a few ideas for making the most of your time in the Indonesian capital.
See Jakarta from above at Monas
One of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, the National Monument – better known as Monas – commemorates Indonesian independence and sits in the heart of Merdeka Square. Head up the monument for views across the city or take some time to explore the surrounding park.
Step back in time in Kota Tua
For a completely different side of Jakarta, head to Kota Tua, the city’s historic old town. Spend some time around Fatahillah Square, explore the museums and colonial architecture, and wander towards the Kali Besar canal. You could combine Kota Tua with nearby Glodok, Jakarta’s Chinatown, making this a great option if you have half a day to spare.
Discover Indonesia without leaving Jakarta
If you have a little more time, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah offers an introduction to the extraordinary diversity of Indonesia. The large cultural park brings together architecture, museums, gardens and representations of traditions from across the country’s regions – particularly useful if Jakarta is your first visit to Indonesia.
Get your art fix
Contemporary art fans might want to make time for Museum MACAN, Jakarta’s Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara. Its exhibitions feature modern and contemporary art from Indonesia and around the world, offering another perspective on the city’s creative culture.
Eat, shop and explore
Food is a huge part of experiencing Jakarta, so leave some room in your schedule – and your stomach! From Indonesian classics and street food to coffee shops and contemporary restaurants, there’s plenty to discover.
For an easy afternoon or evening, Jakarta’s official tourism guide recommends the Bundaran HI/Grand Indonesia area for sightseeing, shopping and souvenirs, while Blok M is another lively area worth exploring for food, culture and hanging out after dark.
Getting around
Jakarta is a huge city, so allow more travel time than the map might suggest. The MRT and TransJakarta can be useful alternatives to travelling by road; Jakarta’s tourism authority specifically designs some of its visitor itineraries around the two networks.
