Beyond AM and FM – the new normal – 5G

James Cridland, Radio Futurologist, showed us a short video by the BBC on a project delivering broadcast services and better connectivity through 5G for rural and remote citizens of the UK who have been left behind due to the limitations of broadband. “We are not sure yet what 5G is doing or where it’s going, but this is why we must play with this technology and run pilots and trials”. He commented that 5G is very exciting for radio as it could be used and run by broadcasters to replace all of the TV and radio transmission networks. There are however, limitations.  5G is not yet built into mobile phones or that there are no stand-alone radio or TV boxes and that 5G is mainly limited to live broadcasting.   Author: Kim B
